Twitter's rebrand to X has left many curious about the platform's future direction. Beyond the quirky name change, X aims to evolve into an all-encompassing app, branching out from its micro-blogging roots. While significant developments in this direction have been limited thus far, recent hints suggest that change might be on the horizon.
Andrea Conway, a designer at X, has dropped a subtle hint that the platform could soon introduce a built-in voice call feature. In a post, she mentioned making a call on X, which has sparked speculation among users.
While X already supports voice messages in its Direct Messages (DMs), incorporating voice calls would mark a significant addition. Presently, live conversations on the platform are possible through Spaces, a feature akin to Clubhouse. However, Spaces is designed for group interactions and isn't ideal for one-on-one conversations.
The rumored voice calling feature could potentially address this gap. Integrating call support could make X a more comprehensive social media platform, similar to Facebook and Instagram. This move could also help X stand apart from potential competitors like Threads and Bluesky.
Elon Musk himself hinted at calling functionality for the platform earlier. In May, he tweeted, "Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number."
As X ventures into offering more diverse features beyond its initial scope, the rebrand could redefine the platform's role in the social media landscape. While it remains to be seen how the voice calling feature will be implemented and received, it signals X's aspirations for growth and innovation.
